Affiliate marketing has many advantages over selling your own product. For starters, you don't have to create anything, which is a real time saver. However, you do have to go out and find a product to promote. That's where a lot of affiliates run into problems by making a number of costly mistakes. Aside from how they market the product and what ads they use, their product choice alone, in many cases, leaves a lot to be desired. Are you making bad product choices? If you're not sure, read this article. It will point out a few of the most common mistakes.
There are basically three ways to pick a product to sell. You can choose one based on how popular it is, how much it sells for or who the product creator is. Let's go over each of these so you can see what the biggest mistakes are.
Let's start with how popular the product is. A lot of affiliates will head on over to the Clickbank marketplace, which is the most popular one on the Internet, and simply pick out the most popular product in whatever category they're interested in. This is a huge mistake. Why? The reason is because the top products ARE the top products because so many affiliates are already promoting them. So choosing a top product will put you in a situation where you're going up against hundreds of other affiliates, thus making it very hard to make any substantial number of sales.
Then we have how much the product sells for. Many affiliates will simply look for products that are the most expensive in that niche. The problem with this approach is that the marketer hasn't done his research on the niche itself. He doesn't know if these people have that much money to spend. He may end up promoting a product that simply can't sell because the people in that niche aren't likely to part with that much money. So it's important to do your market research first.
Finally, we have the creator of the product. This can work against you in either direction. If you pick out a product by a person with a great reputation, most likely many other affiliates are doing the same thing and you're left with the same situation as promoting the most popular product. If you pick a product made by a person with a bad reputation, or one you aren't sure of, you could be promoting a product that is going to ultimately ruin your own reputation. Guilt by association is very common online.
So, if you can avoid the above mistakes, you'll give yourself a much better chance at becoming a successful affiliate marketer.
